Japanese Lesson 1

I'm going to start posting some Japanese lessons for the benefit of my "readers" and myself.

Topic: This covers Da/Desu. It is probably the most basic form of Japanese. Also remember that Da/Desu can be omitted. Da/Desu can translate as is/it is/are/am or as just a way to finalize a sentence. Da is the informal way while Desu is the formal/more polite way. Also note that Ha (は) is spoken as Wa when it's the particle and subject marker.

1. あなたの車は古いだ。
Anata no kuruma wa furui da.
Your car is old.

2. 私の髪は赤いだ。
Watashi no kami wa akai da.
My hair is red.

3. 田口はジャーナリストだ。
Tauchi wa ja-narisuto da.
Taguchi is a journalist.

4. これはサリーの猫だ。
Kore wa Sari- no neko da.
This is Sally's cat.

5. この犬は病気だ。
Kono inu wa byouki da.
This dog is sick.

6. 彼は田中純です。
Kare wa Tanaka Jun desu.
He is Jun Tanaka.

7. カロルは十歳です。
Karoru wa juusai desu.
Carol is ten years old.

8. ボブは嬉しいです。
Bobu wa ureshii desu.
Bob is happy.

9. 今日はジェーンの誕生日です。
Kyou wa Je-n no tanjoubi desu.
Today is Jane's birthday.

10. これは飛行機です。
Kore wa hikouki desu.
This is an airplane.

*These are the adjective forms of the words and should only be used when describing something.

1. 蝶子の犬は黒いだ。
Chouko no inu wa kuroi da.
"Chouko's dog is black."
2. 彼はソフィアの彼氏だ。
Kare wa Sofia no kareshi da.
"He is Sofia's boyfriend."
3. トムの好物は寿司だ。
Tomu no koubutsu wa sushi da.
"Tom's favorite food is sushi."
4. 美香のキチン壁は白いだ。
Mika no kichin kabe wa shiroi da.
"Mika's kitchen walls are white."
5. 井上真央は有名なアクトレスだ。
Inoue Mao wa yuumeina akutoresu da.
"Mao Inoue is a famous actress."
6. ティムはアメリカ人です。
Timu wa amerikajin desu.
"Tim is an American person."
7. キムはモデルです。
Kimu wa moderu desu.
"Kim is a model."
8. 理恵はエンジニアです。
Rie wa enjinia desu.
"Rie is an engineer."
9. 美智子は美しいです。
Michiko wa utsukushii desu.
"Michiko is beautiful."
10. ジムは消防士です。
Jimu wa shouboushi desu.
"Jim is a firefighter."
