Japanese Lesson 2

Topic: -Tai suffix.
The -tai suffix (たい) on the back of a verb means you want to do something. For example, Iku means to go. The -tai form is Ikitai and means want to go.
Please note that -tai itself can't be used to say you want an object. It's only to be used with verbs. Hoshii (欲しい) is used to say you want an object. I'll cover that in another lesson. Also remember that Desu (です) doesn't have to be used. It only makes the sentence more polite.
Example:
Sentence: Tom wants a computer.
Wrong Way:
トムはコンピューターをたい。
Tomu wa konpyu-ta- wo tai.
Right Way:
Tomu wa konpyu-ta- ga hoshii.
トムはコンピューターが欲しい。

1. 私はハウスを買いたい。
Watashi wa hausu wo kaitai.
I want to buy a house.

2. トムと新は遊びたい。
Tomu to Shin wa asobitai.
Tom and Shin want to play.

3. 明菜は恋愛小説家を見たい。*
Akina wa ren'ai shousetsuka wo mitai.
Akina wants to watch As Good As It Gets.

4. 敦夫は英語の音楽を聞きたい。
Atsuo wa eigo no ongaku wo kikitai.
Atsuo wants to listen to English music.

5. 彼はオレンジを食べたい。
Kare wa orenji wo tabetai.
He wants to eat an orange.

6. マリアはフランスに行きたいです。**
Maria wa furansu ni ikitai desu.
Mari wants to go to France.

7. 私はシネマに行きたいです。**
Watashi wa shinema ni yukitai desu.
I want to go to the cinema.

8. あなたは公園に順を会いたいです。
Anata wa kouen ni Jun wo aitai desu.
You want to meet Jun in the park.

9. ティムはハリー・ポッターと秘密の部屋を読みたいです。***
Timu wa hari- potta- to himitsuno heya wo yomitai desu.
Timu wants to read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

10. 典は今寝たいです。
Nori wa ima netai desu.
Nori wants to sleep now.

*The Japanese title for the American movie As Good As It Gets starring Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt is Ren'ai Shousetsuka (恋愛小説家) which means "A Romance Novel Writer."
**"行く" can be read as Iku or Yuku in their base forms. Iku is more common. Yuku is an older form.
***The Japanese title for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is Hari- Potta- To Himitsuno Heya (ハリー・ポッターと秘密の部屋).
